Bria had been excited when Eliot asked if she’d wanted to meet for dinner after her shift. She was doing her best not to analyze the connection between them. For right now, she simply wanted to enjoy what they had together.

If she thought about it too much, she’d have to recall that Eliot was leaving his position at St. Raymond’s soon. Which would mean that there was nothing keeping him in Portland. But she didn’t want to dwell on those thoughts, because they interfered with what their time now was supposed to be about: tying up the loose ends of their relationship and saying goodbye in a kinder way than they’d been able to six years ago.

She was loving the sex, but even more than that, she’d been enjoying spending time with him outside work—and outside the bedroom. Though not all their excursions went as planned.

She poked at her duck confit, her stomach growling. “I didn’t realize this was what you had in mind when you suggested we meet for dinner this evening.”

She’d thought they might go out for something casual, but Eliot had surprised her with reservations at L’Epicure, one of Portland’s most exclusive French restaurants. It had opened within the past year, to much fanfare, and reservations quickly became impossible to get. Eliot, however, had simply called a few hours before they arrived to reserve a table.

The chef at L’Epicure was well-known for his emphasis on taste and flavor. But most of the food was served in the form of small cubes—hardly enough for two hungry medical professionals coming off a busy shift.

Bria’s duck confit with field greens was a small cube of—presumably—duck, about the size of half a domino, and two lettuce leaves, artfully placed so they crossed one another.

She poked again at the cube dubiously. “Is it supposed to bounce?”

“I think the bouncing is what makes it fancy,” said Eliot. His own small cube of sea bass seemed even smaller in the center of the vast, otherwise empty white plate.

Their waiter approached to ask if they were ready for the next course.

“What is it?” Eliot asked.

“Lobster roe, bathed in a sea of crème fraîche.”

Bria’s heart sank. Why was the most expensive food always the most unappetizing? She was all too familiar with these kinds of restaurants, though it had been a long time since she’d set foot in one. The restaurant was so focused on being exclusive that it had forgotten to make sure to serve good food. In her experience, the quality of the food didn’t matter in a place like this. No one ate it. People came to places like this to see who was here and to be seen themselves.

The waiter removed their plates and set the next course in front of them. Bria looked at Eliot with pleading eyes.

“What’s wrong?” he said. “Don’t you like your, um...your fish eggs?”

At that, they both burst out laughing.

“I’m not sure this type of place is my thing anymore,” she said.

“It’s kind of a bust, isn’t it?” he replied.
